How to Backup and Restore Registry Settings in Windows XP

Here are the ways to back-up your Windows XP Registry, manually:

Method 1 – By making a System Restore Point :

Hit on Create a Restore Point option after visiting Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Hit Next and type some identification for saving that restore, e.g. PreModifiedRegistry. Now click OK and it’s done.

So, if you want to restore the registry now, then just locate that restore point and it will be done automatically e.g. here it is PreModifiedRegistry.

Method 2 – Using Regedit :

Visit Start > Run, write regedit and click the Enter button. Then go to the File > Export, write the identification for the registry file, then select the desired path to save it and hit OK / Save.

And, to restore that registry file, just open the .reg file by double clicking on it that you just exported by using the above method.

Method 3 – Using Windows XP’s Backup Utility :

Visit Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and then Backup, and choose System Data State option to backup the COM+ Class Registration Databases, registry files and the boot files.

Now to restore that registry file from that backup file, use the below procedure:

  1. Launch again the backup utility (as did above) and hit on Advanced Mode option. Now choose Restore and Manage Media
  2. Locate the backup file, to restore
  3. Tick on System State option. In the Restore Files To window, and choose Original Location
  4. Visit Tools > Menu > Options, then click on Always replace the files on my computer option. It is mandatory, otherwise it will confirm everytime to replace each file (there are several files to be replaced in this step).
  5. Hit the OK button
  6. Hit on Start Restore. Some warning window will appear, stating Restoring System State will always overwrite current System… etc.. Overwrite it by hitting the OK button, and again OK to the Confirm that Restore window.

After adopting the steps mentioned above, the restoring process will be started, which could take a few moments to complete, depending upon your computer’s hardware configuration.

Al last, you’ll have to shut down and re-start your computer.

The 1st method to find the explanation of that difficult error-message is, searching it on any search engine. But you won’t be able to select and copy the text present in those error messages, so we are forced to write them in the Search, by our own.

Ok, you can get rid of this problem by using this method.

From the next time when you get some error message windows, just click on the CTRL + C shortcut, and all the text present in that message dialog box, will get copied to your computer’s clipboard. (Note: Only works with Windows Error Messages, and this method can’t be used if you get error while opening any software)

Now open the notepad or some other text editor, and paste that text into it (or into some search engine directly) by hitting the shortcut CTRL + V.

For example, when some error window opens, hit the CTRL + C, it will get copied, and now you can paste it anywhere. 🙂

You might have gone with the similar problem when you are installing some application on your Android Mobile Phone, and it says, “For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android market.”.

That’s ok, no need to worry about it.

This is done by default to block those applications which are not from the Android market, because they could steal your personal data or could contain some harmful data structures. So take the precautions before installing any non-market apps on your android phone such as checking its’ author and genuineness etc.

Well, now coming onto the point,
follow the procedure to install the non-market apps on your android phone,

  1. First of all Go to Main Menu > Settings
  2. Now look an option named Applications, click on it
  3. probably the first option would be Unknown Sources (Allow Installation of non-Market Applications) – Just Select this option by clicking on it

And here you’re done with it.

Now to install app on your phone just download any .apk file on your Computer and install it on your android phone.

And after installing the authentic apps on your Android Phone, remember to switch the Non-market Apps Installation OFF (by de-selecting the option which you did by the above provided method),  just for a few security reasons.

Enjoy. 🙂
